RCSI introduces Lynda for staff

Dated - November 18, 2013

Dear Colleagues,

As part of our strategy of enhancing RCSI’s Organisational Capabilities, HR are looking at new ways that we can support Staff Learning and Development. Following a successful trial this summer, we are now providing all staff with access to the online training library of lynda.com. The lynda.com library provides 24-hour access to video-based training on a multitude of topics, with a library of over 2,000 courses. Courses include software skills covering all versions of Microsoft Office and Moodle as well as business topics such as project management, running effective meetings and team management. You’ll also find modules around creating e-learning, graphic design and photography to name but a few.

Setting up your Lynda.com Profile
You can set up your Lynda.com profile by following this link – http://iplogin.lynda.com. Full details of how to create your Lynda.com profile can be found here on the portal.

It is important to note that the first time you access Lynda.com to set up your profile you must be at an RCSI location. Once your profile is set up you can then access training 24/7 from your computer, smartphone or tablet. You can watch entire courses or single tutorial videos as you need them. Exercise files let you follow along with the instruction as you learn, while bookmarks and playlists help you keep track of what you’d like to watch.

Benefits of using Lynda.com
• Unlimited access to courses on a wide variety of technologies and disciplines

• Beginner to advanced courses on a wide variety of topics

• Short, concise videos within each course which are easy to search and easy to understand

• Up-to-date content to keep skills current and to learn new skills

• The option to take complete courses or bite sized videos as you need them

• Access to instructors’ exercise files to follow along as you learn
Playlists
As Lynda.com offers training on such a wide variety of topics, we have put together some suggested playlists to help you navigate through the library. You can access these playlists by following these links:

IT Training
Project Management
Management and Leadership
Professional Development
Media and Design

There are lots of other courses which may be of interest to you and I would encourage you to take a look through the catalogue and see what you find helpful. Courses are organised into chapters and are fully searchable, so you can either watch the whole course or just the sections of most value to you. As you’ll appreciate, we’re asking staff to only undertake work-related courses during business hours, but you’re welcome to use lynda.com outside of work for areas of personal interest. As with attending any in-person professional development courses, you should have a conversation with your manager/supervisor to agree a suitable time to take the training.

Support
If you have any questions or need support with getting started on lynda.com please contact the IT Helpdesk on ext. 2273 or our Staff Learning and Development Manager, Catriona Campbell on ext. 2527. For those of you sitting in an open-plan area we have a limited number of headphones available so please let Catriona or the helpdesk know if you need a set.

This online training is in no way intended to replace classroom-based training, but rather to provide you with performance support at a time that best suits you and where you can learn at your own pace. We hope you will use this opportunity to avail of a wide variety of training opportunities for your professional and personal development.
