Enhancing Research Impact

RCSI provides numerous supports for our researchers so that you can make the most out of your research outputs and improve your impact and international profile.

Enhancing your research visibility will help build your reputation, boost citations and enhance your profile internationally.

There are lots of supports available to help you to plan, publish and disseminate your research in the best possible way for improving your impact. If you are keen to build a research strategy for your or your team(s) we recommend the following:

  • Read “Publishing for Impact Guidelines 2021”. This provides guidance to all members of the RCSI research community about publication, visibility, impact and metrics, to facilitate optimum impact from published research.
  • Understand your bibliometrics, read the libguide (available here) on how to make your research visible and impactful.
  • Use the institutional licenses to SciVal and Altmetric. These are complementary tools used to identify your research impact through
    • citations (details found within the guide to SciVal) and
    • in the wider media, governmental policies or patents (for details on Altmetric, see here)
    • For information on training please contact Catherine Sullivan
  • Ensure your Research Information Management System (RIMS) profile is up-to-date. Databases such as Altmetric Explorer rely on this information for institutional and departmental publication profiling. If you need any help or guidance please contact Roisin Moriarty
  • Inform RCSI Communications and RCSI Discover about research innovations, grants and high impact publication stories, with as much advance notice as possible, to boost your online profile and enhance international research reputation.
    • Communications are there to help support your research output needs. For more information on the functions, resources for researchers and the processes in place on how to contact Communications, click on the links provided.
