Tax information for non-Irish residents

If it is your first time working in Ireland, you will need a PPS number, a Certificate of Tax Credits, and an Irish bank account. If you are joining us from outside the EU, you may also need to register with the Garda Immigration Bureau.

PPS Number

If you have met the necessary qualifications to work within Ireland and have also been granted a working visa (if applicable), you will need to apply for a Personal Public Service number.  This is a unique identifier for use in any transactions you may have with public bodies or persons authorised by those bodies to act on their behalf.  You will need to contact your Local Social Welfare Office who will assist you with the registration process.

If you are not an Irish national, you will need to provide the Social Welfare office with:

  • Your passport or national identity card or your immigration card
  • Evidence of your address, such as a household bill in your name. If such a document is unavailable, a letter from the HR Department (HRqueries@rcsi.ie) confirming your employment with RCSI will suffice. Please note that you must have a residential address for HR to issue this letter for you

You will be advised of your PPS number by the Social Welfare office by writing within 2-3 weeks of your application. This letter will be posted to the address given on your application form. You must advise HR of your PPS number when you receive it.

Certificate of tax credits

Once you have received your PPS number you will need to apply to Revenue for a Tax Credit Certificate. This is a notice which is issued to show your tax credits and rate bands.  You can do this by completing the appropriate sections on Form 12A and sending the completed form to your Local Revenue Office. You will then receive notification of your tax credits and rate band.

Opening an Irish bank account

Salaries at RCSI are paid by bank transfer therefore you will require an Irish bank account to get paid.  In order to open a bank account, you will need to provide the bank with:

  • Your passport or driving licence
  • Proof of address (utility bill) OR PPS number OR Tax credit certificate.

What bank should I go to?

You can choose any bank that you wish. However, RCSI has an agreement with the below AIB Bank which means that you just require your Passport and a letter from HR (HRqueries@rcsi.ie) confirming your employment. In order to draft such a letter, we require your date of birth and a residential address.

Registering with the Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB)

If you are a non E.U. National you are required to register with the GNIB (Garda National Immigration Office).  On arrival to Ireland, all non E.U. nationals must register with the Garda Immigration Office to ensure that you receive a GNIB card and a residency stamp on your passport.
