Quality and Business Excellence Office

The Quality and Business Excellence Office has functional responsibility in the following areas:

• Supporting the implementation of operational strategy and quality control
• Quality Assurance and Compliance
• Internal and External Audit
• Continuous Value Quality Improvement
• Lean 6 Sigma and Excellence in Process Design
• Process and Operational Risk Management
• Change Management Systems
• Cost efficiency and effectiveness
• Stakeholder feedback systems
• Supporting organisation management information systems

The unit operates using a process-based Quality Management System (QMS) which supports the mission of the RCSI Surgical Affairs Department. This Quality Management System and framework is underpinned by the broader Business Excellence Model and ensures that our programme and services offerings are fit for purpose, represents value for money for stakeholders, in particular the relevant funding agencies and that we deliver the highest possible standards of surgical and emergency medicine training in Ireland and overseas.

Our quality statement is thus enshrined in the DOSA Mission: “We will support the RCSI Noble Purpose by delivering excellence in surgical education and training and by setting and supporting the highest possible standards in surgical practice. We will at all times act in the interest of patients and the quality of their care.”

Our quality assurance cycle and the framework which underpins our QMS is illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 below:
