Academic Promotions Committee

The RCSI Academic Promotions Committee (APC) is delegated responsibility by the Medicine & Health Sciences Board to oversee and direct the Academic Staff Promotions process at RCSI.

The Guiding Principles of the Academic Promotions Committee are to:

  • recognise and reward higher quality performance and achievement
  • foster scholarship and excellence
  • encourage continuous professional development and life-long learning
  • operate in a fair, open and transparent manner

Terms of Reference

  • Oversee the Academic Staff Promotions process and ensure it is conducted in accordance with the guiding principles, specified policy requirements and procedures;
  • Set, agree and revise criteria, policy and procedures for Academic Staff Promotions at RCSI;
  • Set dates and timings for Academic Promotions;
  • consider eligible applications, references, and letters of support obtained from internal and external sources;
  • Agree and apply the promotions scoring methodology
  • Assess and evaluate eligible applications in accordance with agreed criteria, including Education, Research and Contribution to RCSI and Society;
  • Select the specified number of candidates for promotion from those deemed eligible on the basis of competitiveness and recommend these through the Academic Council for approval by the Medicine and Health Sciences Board, no later than May of the year in which the promotions will take effect
  • Sign off on feedback documentation for communication to Heads of Department and applicants

Membership

The Promotions Committee will comprise 14 members in total, 3 of whom will be external.  The term will normally be for three years.
