The Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery was established in 1974, under the leadership of Ms Mary Frances Crowley. Since then, the Faculty of Nursing & Midwifery has provided education programmes to nurses and midwives in clinical, management and research roles.
BSc, Postgraduate Diploma and MSc programmes were delivered by the Faculty until 2014, at which point a new governance structure was implemented. This was in keeping with the RCSI’s commitment to continuous quality improvement and good corporate governance. All BSc, PG Diploma, MSc and PhD programmes are now offered by the School of Nursing & Midwifery.
The Faculty is accountable to the Surgery and Postgraduate Faculties Board. Under the leadership of Professor Thomas Kearns, Executive Director, together with the Dean and the Board of the Faculty, the Faculty has initiated the development of a professional competency programme with a view to becoming a leading provider of continuing professional development (CPD) programmes. The Faculty is currently focused on meeting the on-going CPD needs of registered nurses and midwives.
Currently, we provide an Aptitude Test for Overseas Nurses, a suite of CPD programmes and project management of quality improvement initiatives. In addition we conduct commissioned research projects for a wide range of stakeholders.
The Faculty also hosts an annual International Research and Education conference. This conference is now in its 36th year and as such, is one of the oldest conferences of its type in Europe.
The Fellowship of the Faculty of Nursing & Midwifery RCSI (FFNMRCSI) is offered exclusively by the RCSI and is one of the most prestigious professional qualifications awarded to nurses in Ireland. We collaborate with other RCSI departments for interdisciplinary education and research purposes, including the Faculty of Medicine, Schools of Nursing & Midwifery, Physiotherapy and Pharmacy, Department of General Practice and the Institute of Leadership.
