MSF Talk by Professor Paul McMaster – “War Surgery in the World’s Newest Country”

Dated - February 25, 2014

Dear Colleagues,

A lecture will take place, by Professor Paul McMaster, surgeon and President of Médecins Sans Frontières UK, in Dublin next week entitled “War Surgery in the World’s Newest Country”.

The talk will take place on Tuesday 4th March at the Little Museum of Dublin, on St. Stephens Green at 6.30pm.

Prof. McMaster received a call a few days before Christmas asking if he would take an emergency team into South Sudan to boost surgical capacity in the areas where fighting had been quite intense. He spent four weeks on the ground treating war-wounded patients close to the front lines. Upon his return he wrote a diary-style piece for The Guardian.

A retired general surgeon from Birmingham, Prof. McMaster has completed several missions with MSF including assignments in the war zones of Sri Lanka, Ivory Coast, Democratic Republic of Congo and Somalia, and was one of the first international surgeons to arrive in Haiti directly after the earthquake.

A small reception will be held at 6.30pm with the talk will commencing promptly at 7pm. All are welcome, so please circulate to any of your colleagues in RCSI or others who may be interested in attending. Those who would like to attend should RSVP to events@dublin.msf.org.
