On 28 March, Dermot O’Flynn, Director of Professional Development at the Institute of Leadership welcomed Lieutenant Commander Tony Geraghty to the RCSI Albert Theatre where he delivered a thought-provoking and timely lecture on ‘Naval Leadership in a Medical Crisis’.
Since 2015 the Irish Naval Service has rescued 17,953 people from the Mediterranean and assisted in the rescue of another 4965, something that the Irish nation should be very proud of.
In the lecture, Lieutenant Commander Geraghty detailed how naval leadership is not about a strict autocratic chain of command, but is, in fact, a fluid relationship amongst teams where the crew rapidly and effortlessly change in and out of both teams and leadership roles in order to achieve the mission.
