Phone-a-friend Friday, 5 October
This day reminds us to reach out to a family member, friend or neighbour to say “Hi”. Social interaction throughout all ages is a part of positive mental health and wellbeing.
The theme for this year’s Positive Ageing Week is ‘celebrating the 100-year life’. Life expectancies have been rising by up to three months a year since 1840, and there is no sign of that changing. A recent study shows that more than half the babies born in wealthier countries since 2000 may reach their 100th birthdays[1].
Many of us have been raised on the traditional notion of a three-stage approach to our working lives: education, followed by work and then retirement. The benefits of living longer and getting older are immense and they affect all parts of our lives; our finances, health and leisure. However, we can become too focussed on the negatives and we forget to enjoy the positives. Positive Ageing Week allows us to look at enjoying living longer and getting older.
RCSI’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Unit has coordinated the activities taking place throughout the week with support from Age Action and a number of departments and services at RCSI, including: the Library Services, the Gym, the Department of Molecular and Cellular Therapeutics, the Department of Physiotherapy, the Information Technology department, Inspire and Estates. RCSI’s Events and Conferences team and Design Unit were also instrumental for help with the preparations and planning for the events.
If you have any questions about any of the events taking place next week, please email Equality@rcsi.ie.
