Innovation Training Series: Searching for the Prior Art for an Invention

The Office of Research and Innovation (ORI) with HR’s Staff Learning and Development department have launched a new 6 part Innovation Training Series. This training series is targeted at RCSI principal investigators, post-docs and Ph.D students with an interest in entrepreneurship, research commercialisation and industry collaboration. The second instalment entitled ‘Are your research findings patentable? – how to search the prior art for an invention’ will be delivered by Derek John and will cover the following topics

  • Understand the importance of non-patent prior art
  • Identify and use the most relevant patent databases
  • Understand how to read patent claims and specifications
  • Understand the difference between pending and granted patents
  • Use basic Boolean search terms and proximity operators
  • Search by classification number
  • Understand how to use EP Register/US Public Pair to check prosecution status
