Time: Wednesday’s (1:00-2:00 p.m.)

Course Convenors: Prof. Teresa Pawlikowska, Director and Jane Burns, Research Officer, Health Professions Education Centre – RCSI

Who should attend: This course aims to support you in writing a paper concerning medical education for submission to a relevant journal. The course is suitable for those who have data in the field of medical education and who wish to publish in a medical education journal, or those who have a paper that needs to be re-drafted for a medical education journal.

Course Objectives:

  1. Demonstrate how Research/Article writing can be managed.
  2. Design a realistic writing plan to help manage the article writing process.
  3. Understand IMRAD techniques and tools for article planning and writing.
  4. Write an abstract, letter of submission and an article outline.
  5. Understand Impact Factor and how to target your submissions.
  6. Select effective key words to support your article.
  7. Understand the journal publication process.
  8. How to re-purpose work and write as you develop a project presentation, poster s etc.
  9. Work collaboratively /understand and participate in peer review.
  10. Enjoy writing!

By the end of this course participants will

  1. Have an understanding of how to integrate effective search strategies at the beginning of the writing process.
  2. Know how to integrate researching and article writing into their daily activity.
  3. Have an understanding of the writing for publication process and the review process.
  4. Be able to develop a realistic effective work plan utilising a single source approach to content development.
  5. Know how to target journals and identify other areas of publication/presentation.
  6. Submit a proposal to a targeted publication.
  7. Be more effective at managing timelines and deadlines.
  8. Appreciate the benefits of peer reviewing before submission.
  9.  Be able to Identify  collaborative partners.
  10.  Enjoy the writing process!
