The Health Professions Education Centre invites you to a series of workshops in the areas of Technology Enhanced Learning, Curriculum Design, Teaching & Learning Methods, & the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning. The first set of workshops in this series will take place in March & April, commencing with an Introduction to Blended Learning (details below).
Blended Learning integrates online and traditional face-to-face (f2f) teaching strategies in a “planned, pedagogically valuable manner, and do not just combine but trade-off face-to-face time with online activity, or vice versa” (Vignare, 2007). Negotiating the blend of online and f2f contact, and finding the appropriate balance is a growing challenge for all concerned in contemporary education (Clark 2003). But with careful planning of the sequence of the f2f learning experience with online activities a blended learning approach can allow students to have a quality learning experience, and it holds potential for better use of staff time during the modules implementation phase (O’Neill & Galvin, 2013).
This workshop will explore ‘Blended Learning’ and question some of the challenges and opportunities in adopting a blended approach. Key concepts, trends, different models, and the role of the lecturer within a blended environment will be discussed within the context of healthcare education.
This workshop will facilitate you to:
• Identify and critique the learning techniques and modes which underpin current blended learning practice.
• Identify and analyse current and emerging technologies and practices in blended learning.
• Utilize available strategies and tools for building blended learning environment on the VLE.
