RCSI among the top 50 most international universities in the world (Times Higher Education University World Rankings, 2014-15)

Dated - January 29, 2015

Dear Colleagues,

As you know, in terms of international reputation, rankings of higher education institutions are increasingly important. Late last year RCSI was categorised by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings as being in the first 400 institutions in the world for the first time in 2014-15. Following on from that announcement, the top 100 institutions by ‘International Outlook’ were listed this week and RCSI ranked as number 49 in the world.

They judge world class universities across all of their core missions – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. The rankings employ 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons available, grouped into five areas:

·         Teaching: the learning environment

·         Research: volume, income and reputation

·         Citations: research influence

·         Industry income: innovation

·         International outlook: staff, students and research

Institutions are excluded from the Times Higher Education World University Rankings if they do not teach undergraduates; if they teach only a single narrow subject; or if their research output amounted to fewer than 1,000 articles between 2008 and 2012 (200 a year).

This week Times Higher Education produced data that further analysed the ‘International Outlook’ sub-category for the first time. ‘International outlook’ gives credits for international students and staff, and research publications with international partners.

We are very pleased to be seen in the top 50 institutions in the world with regard to ‘International Outlook’ and as we take on a new staff member to focus our activities on reputation and institutional metrics next month (Ms Aoife Flanagan), it is an encouraging signal that we have done and can continue to make much progress with our ‘Growth & Excellence’ Strategy.
