The Department of Mathematics & Statistics, NUI Maynooth is delighted to announce that, in conjunction with Strand 1 of 3U N-STEP, it will host a Teaching and Learning Seminar on “Developing and Enhancing Pedagogic Research Skills in STEM Disciplines” on Tuesday, 13th May 2014.

  • Michael Grove, Director of STEM Education Centre, University of Birmingham.
  • Samantha Pugh, Faculty Student Education Officer, Faculty of Mathematics and Physical Sciences, University of Leeds.
  • Tina Overton, Professor of Chemical Education, University of Hull.

This workshop is part of the National Seminar Series funded by the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning.

This workshop aims to support staff who are interested in getting involved in educational research at third level. It is open to all staff in STEM disciplines from any third level institution in Ireland. The workshop will include sessions in which participants will have an opportunity to develop their own research plan. They will have an opportunity to discuss this with the workshop organisers and the other participants. At the end of the workshop they will have a research plan which they can then implement.

Event Details
This is a one-day workshop whose aim is to develop and enhance pedagogic research skills among academics in STEM Disciplines. This event will consist of a mixture of plenary sessions, hands-on workshops, and discussion sessions with opportunities provided for individual support on a range of topics. It will be led by experts from the STEM disciplines and will address topics such as: developing research questions and methodologies; developing funding proposals; writing for publication; effective dissemination techniques and practices; and engaging in reflective practice.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of this workshop, participants should be able to:

  • Write and frame pedagogic research questions;
  • Collect and analyse data using qualitative and quantitative research methodologies;
  • Recognise and respond to key methodological and ethical issues in educational research;
  • Understand how to manage and plan pedagogic research activity
  • Undertake more effective dissemination and write for publication in relevant journals;
  • Develop grant proposals in this area.
