Pictured above is Professor Hilary Humphreys, (Professor of Clinical Microbiology); Professor Hannah McGee (Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, RCSI); and Dr. Michael Gardam. RCSI and the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) hosted the ‘Safe Patient Care’ course in early September for the fifth year running. The aim of the course is to educate healthcare workers in acute or non-acute settings who are interested in implementing changes to practice which will improve patient safety. To date we have had a record attendance of 779 participants plus 182 participants for the “WHO” workshop which was run last year. In conjunction with the course this year, Dr. Michael Gardam was invited to give a public lecture to 160 healthcare workers. Dr. Gardam is the Physician Director of Infection Prevention and Control Canada; the National Lead of infection control for Safer Healthcare Now! He is a pioneer of using behaviour change approaches, including ‘Positive Deviance’ and ‘Front Line Ownership’ to improve patient safety. The course is run by a team from the HPSC and RCSI that also includes Dr Fidelma Fitzpatrick, Sheila Donlon, Siobhan Dowling, Ann Shannon and Margaret Nadin.
