Summary of Post
Dysfunctional healing in diabetic patients can lead to chronic wounds termed diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs). These open wounds lead to patient suffering and, in severe cases of microbial infection, diabetic foot infection (DFI) can result in the need to amputate the affected limb. While antibiotics have traditionally been used to treat these infections, the rise of antibiotic resistance necessitates the need for new therapeutic approaches. Ideally these approaches should treat the infection but also heal the underlying wound. This project offers one such approach by combining two synergistic technologies: antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) and injectable hydrogels. Thus, we will conjugate AMPs to injectable hydrogels to synergistically enhance the treatment of DFUs.
The postdoctoral researcher will work closely with Dr. Browne in the multidisciplinary Tissue Engineering Research Group (TERG) and collaborators at the University of Porto and the University of Coimbra. Note, this position will include a secondment in Portugal to work directly with collaborators.
