Project Overview
We currently seek a research assistant to develop an exciting and innovative project involving the creation of a novel 3D bioprinting model to dissect the impact of androgen excess on skeletal muscle energy metabolism in women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). PCOS is a chronic metabolic disorder, affecting 10-13% of all women. PCOS is associated with a significantly increased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. Metabolic perturbations in this disorder are intrinsically linked to androgen excess. There are currently no disease-specific treatments to modify metabolic risk in women with PCOS.
The project builds on the existing expertise in terms of 3D bioprinting patient derived material within Dr. Mcllroy’s group alongside Professor O’Reilly’s world-leading clinical expertise on PCOS associated metabolic dysregulation. The successful applicant will be guided by both Prof O’Reilly and Dr. Mcllroy to develop highly novel ex vivo models by applying 3D bioprinting to patient-derived tissues from PCOS patients taking part in on-going clinical trials. The programme of work will establish a highly innovative biological model to dissect the metabolic consequences of androgen excess in this condition.
