About NSRSC
A key objective of the NSRSC is to facilitate integration of clinical trials networks across all hospital groups and foster interest in surgical research among the surgical community in Ireland. This will help create a research-led surgical infrastructure for the betterment of human health and improved surgical care for patients.
To this end, the NSRSC seeks to develop a clinical trials network and a portfolio of studies within the surgical community in Ireland. The Centre aims to support those involved in surgical research and trials across the island of Ireland, assisting surgical colleagues from a variety of specialities in all aspects of the set up, and conduct of surgical trials.
The NSRSC is offering a one-year clinical trials fellowship for a surgical trainee or Non-Consultant Hospital Doctor (NCHD) to assist the NSRSC in this initiative.
The fellowship will allow the successful candidate to gain valuable experience in the day-to-day set up and management of clinical trials, understanding of various trial designs and methodologies, ethics and regulatory approvals and data analysis platforms. The fellowship year can be part of studies pursuant towards a higher degree (MD or MSc/MCh) subject to the requirements of the higher degree studies being undertaken. In addition the NSRSC will provide tuition fees for the successful candidate to complete the MSc in Clinical Research hosted by NUI Galway, either full time (1 year) or part-time (two years).
Duties of the post 
The Fellow will play a key role in assisting the NSRSC team in the day-to-day activities of surgical trial coordination including:
  • Support the review and development of research protocols and patient information documents
  • Prepare and co-ordinate the submission of Research Ethics applications
  • Assist with writing of submissions for grant funding
  • Assist with data analysis and study reporting
  • Arrange study training and ICH-GCP training as necessary
  • Prepare regular status reports for the National Clinical Lead for the NSRSC and Managing Director of Surgical Affairs
  • Ensure the tracking of study activities and milestones in a timely manner.
  • Create and maintain study files and other required documentation, as required.
  • Support the Clinical Teams to ensure compliance with ICH-GCP for study-related activities
  • Assist in the preparation of materials for internal and external communications.
  • Complete all assigned training and facilitate ongoing personal development and learning
  • Any other duties assigned by the National Clinical lead and Programme Manager
Candidate Experience and requirements:
Applicants are welcome from all surgical specialties. Those applying from national higher surgical training schemes will require permission from their programme director for one-year out of programme experience. It is anticipated that the fellowship would be most suited at the level of ST5 /ST6 or with equivalent level of clinical experience. The anticipated start date for the first fellowship is July 2022 or January 2023.
All candidates, at time of application;
  • Must be registered with the Irish Medical Council either on the General or Training Division of the register.
  • Be eligible for employment in Ireland
  • Have passed the intercollegiate MRCS examinations or equivalent
  • be currently enrolled in the national surgical specialty training programmes at a level of ST5-ST6 OR have at least 4 years clinical experience in surgical posts in the Irish or Northern Irish Health services
In addition to the above, it would be desirable to demonstrate the following
  • have had some experience of surgical research
  • have had experience of enrolling patients into clinical trials
  • have published research in recognised surgical or scientific journals
