The Department of Clinical Microbiology has welcomed six summer students into its Enhanced Clinical Microbiology Skills programme in conjunction with the RCSI Research Summer School (RSS).
The students – Alison Hunt, Emma Skelly, Aoife Reilly, Elaine Tan, Hong Lui Tan and Pauline Schohn are each undertaking a basic science or clinical project with PIs in the department between now and the end of July .
In addition to their projects and participation in RSS events, the students will engage in a weekly series of microbiology-centred workshops, journal clubs and clinical microbiology-focussed tasks including shadowing clinicians in the ICU and attending interdisciplinary meetings in Beaumont Hospital. This programme is designed to provide enhanced skills in microbiology to undergraduate medical and pharmacy students with a particular interest in the subject.
In welcoming the students Professor Hilary Humphreys, Head of Department of Clinical Microbiology RCSI and Consultant Microbiologist in Beaumont Hospital said “It is a pleasure to welcome you to the department for the first year of what I hope will be an exciting and fulfilling educational and skills programme. The planned events are underpinned by the contribution of academic and clinical staff in RCSI and Beaumont Hospital, to ensure that you experience the breadth of microbiology, i.e. bench to bedside (bringing research findings to the care of patients) and bedside to bench (clinical challenges influencing current and future research). I am very grateful for the enthusiastic participation of staff in the Department of Clinical Microbiology and I want to thank medical and other colleagues in Beaumont Hospital for their assistance and valuable time.”
