This is a free master class event for health, mental health and allied health professionals on mental health aspects of presentations to the general hospital by young people aged 15-25 years.
Delivered by Dr. Siobhan MacHale, Consultant Liaison Psychiatrist with Beaumont Hospital Dublin, this short master class will examine the dynamic interaction between physical and mental health during the transitional phase from mid-adolescence to young adulthood, and how this impacts on the diagnosis and treatment of young people in general medical settings. The main focus will be on the mental health needs of young people engaged in ongoing care in the general medical setting, rather than on self harm or substance misuse which are well covered elsewhere. During this master class, participants will be introduced to the range of medical contexts in which mental health issues can impact on the patient’s health journey including:
– Mental Health Aspects of Chronic Illness and Disease
– Physical Health Presentations among Young People with pre-existing Mental Disorders
– Medically Unexplained Symptoms
Recognising the challenges that medical and allied health professionals face in general medical settings, this Master Class will support participants to recognise mental health aspects of physical health presentations. It will also encourage engagement of mental health practitioners in the patient’s physical health journey. Participants will be presented with some practical and useful techniques for working with young people with general medical care needs.
