RCSI Alumni Undergraduate Student Research Programme 2014

The RCSI Research Office in conjunction with the RCSI Alumni Office are pleased to announce the 2014 RCSI Alumni Student Research Programme. This initiative will support student-initiated research projects undertaken with guidance from RCSI clinicians and scientists. The programme is funded through the generosity of RCSI Alumni with the objective of providing undergraduate students with the opportunity of gaining valuable experience and significant insights in a research environment.

Alumni research projects are conducted in RCSI (St Stephen’s Green Campus or Beaumont Hospital) from June to September and is of 8 weeks duration. Research projects can be conducted in the Basic Sciences, Clinical Medicine and Healthcare Medicine. The Programme is administered through the RCSI Research Office under the stewardship of Professor Raymond Stallings, Director of Research.

RCSI is very grateful to all of our Alumni for providing these opportunities to facilitate RCSI undergraduate students to conduct research projects.

* Trinitas Ventures Limited is a fully integrated medical device research and development company. A Summer 2013 Internship is available for a medical student with a particular interest in biomedical technology. The position would particularly suit a post-graduate student with prior biomedical engineering experience. Two companies are presently operating within the Trinitas Ventures facility. The first is an interventional cardiology company and is developing percutaneous arterial puncture closure technology for use by interventional cardiologists and radiologists. The second company is an interventional gynaecology company and is developing a novel hysteroscopically placed female sterilisation device. This company is presently in clinical trials.

Trinitas Ventures is currently carrying out prototype development for 2 further projects in the field of structural heart disease and endoscopic treatment of obesity.

This opportunity offers the candidate the possibility to understand implantable medical device development from concept through bench testing, large animal implant work, clinical trials, scale-up manufacture and regulatory approval for market release.

Eligibility

The Programme is open to all full-time undergraduate students.

Application Procedure

Applicants submit an application to the Research Office which includes the following documentation:-

  • Application Form including details of research proposal
  • Letter of support from clinician or scientist supervising the project
  • Names of 2 referees

All applications are assessed by a panel of clinicians and scientists. Funding will be announced on 1st May 2013.

Award

A grant of €2,500 is to be awarded as a stipend to successful applicants.
