Basic Data Recording and Cleaning

In this session we will look at how to create a codebook that describes the contents of your dataset. It is very useful, especially with a dataset containing many variables, to have a simple listing of what the dataset contains.

This listing can be circulated to collaborators, or can simply act as a resource for you to peruse. Additionally, recording and organising data may take different forms, depending on the kind of information you’re collecting. The way you record your data should relate to how you’re planning to analyze and use it. We will also examine techniques to identify incomplete, incorrect, inaccurate, irrelevant, etc. data and then replace, modify, or delete this dirty data. This is usually referred to as ‘cleaning your data’.

Target audience: All researchers interested in improving their data recording skills.

Duration: 50 minutes
