Basic Data Recording and Cleaning and Descriptive Statistics

In this session we will look at how to create a codebook that describes the contents of your dataset. It is very useful, especially with a dataset contains many variables, to have a simple listing of what the dataset contains. This listing can be circulated to collaborators, or can simply act as a resource for you to peruse.

Additionally, recording and organising data may take different forms, depending on the kind of information you’re collecting. The way you record your data should relate to how you’re planning to analyze and use it. We will also examine techniques to identify incomplete, incorrect, inaccurate, irrelevant, etc. data and then replace, modify, or delete this dirty data. This is usually referred to as ‘cleaning your data’.

Descriptive statistics are numbers that are used to summarize and describe the characteristics of a set of data. Data refers to the information that has been collected from an experiment, a survey, a historical record, etc. In this session we will explore some measures that are commonly used to describe a data set: measures of central tendency and measures of variability (or dispersion).

Target audience: All researchers interested in improving their data recording skills and interested in learning how to appropriately summarise and describe a data set.
