Effective Written Communications
The ability to write successfully at work is more important than ever. The aim of this highly practical half-day workshop is to show participants how to write clear, concise, well-structured, polished documents (from emails to reports). The focus is on ensuring all written material is appropriate for its target audiences and meets its objectives.
It is suitable for anyone who would like to feel more confident that they can communicate effectively at work – whatever they write.
On completion of this course, participants will:
- Feel confident that they can write clearly and professionally
- Understand how to apply a consistent style across all written communications
- Plan and write effectively – by focusing on the target audiences and the objective
- Be able to identify and avoid common errors of grammar and punctuation
Course content
Part 1 – Planning: Clear thinking leads to clear writing
- Create an effective objective
- Step-by-step guide to planning reports, letters, emails etc.
- Write a first draft quickly: using a skeleton structure
Part 2 – Writing effectively: Using strong clear English to meet objectives
- Write in a suitable style and tone of voice for your target audience
- Ensure busy readers get the message quickly:
- Use clear, concise, accessible English
- Create short clear sentences and paragraphs
- Use headings, linking words and lists for accessibility
- Make every word count / cut dead wood and waffle
- Take care with jargon, clichés, ‘business speak’ etc.
- Use strong, precise, active verbs
- Presentation with impact – create documents that look accessible and readable
