Description:
The teaching of large groups presents many challenges for the Higher
Education practitioner, particularly in the context of the need for active and student-centred approaches to support effective learning. This workshop explores the particular role large group teaching has in higher education and the various issues and problems that may arise.
It will also seek to addresses key points in being an effective teacher of
large groups through maintaining engagement and exploring ways of improving learning, understanding and the retention of knowledge.
Intended Learning Outcomes:
This workshop will facilitate you to:
- Discuss the practicalities of facilitating active learning in a large group teaching format
- Review a range of techniques and strategies for managing interaction in lectures
- Discuss how research into student attention and knowledge retention impacts upon the design of a teaching session
